Finding Strength in the Fight:

Bridging the Gap in
Sickle Cell and
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Advocacy

At DIA Foundation, we believe that every individual facing a chronic, debilitating illness deserves more than just management—they deserve a cure, unyielding advocacy, and a community that listens.

Different Diagnoses.
Same Fight.
More awareness. More research. More hope.

Two Conditions.
One Shared Battle.

While Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) may seem like entirely different medical diagnoses on the surface, they share a profound and painful common thread: they are invisible battlefields fought in the joints, the blood, and the daily lives of millions.

These causes have deep meaning for our founder, his family, and the organization. Sickle Cell Disease and Rheumatoid Arthritis personally affected the lives of two family members, Daniel Lucas (cousin) and Bobbie Davis (mother-in-law) throughout their lives. Our work in this space is meant to honor their memories and legacy of life that was lost too soon.

Today, we are sharing why our foundation champions both of these critical areas, how we support diverse groundbreaking medical research, and how we are amplifying the voices of patients who need it most.

Sickle Cell Disease
(SCD)

A “pain crisis” can strike without warning, as crescent-shaped red blood cells block blood flow, causing agonizing pain and organ damage.

Rheumatoid Arthritis joint illustration

Rheumatoid Arthritis
(RA)

The body's own immune system mistakenly attacks the joints, leading to severe inflammation, stiffness, and irreversible damage.

The Shared Reality of Chronic Pain and Advocacy

Beyond the physical symptoms, patients in both communities face steep systemic hurdles:

The Advocacy Gap

Both conditions—particularly SCD—have suffered from severe underfunding and a lack of public awareness compared to other chronic illnesses.

The Diagnostic Delay

Patients often spend years navigating a complex medical system before receiving an accurate diagnosis or an effective treatment plan.

The Mental Toll

Living with unpredictable, lifelong pain takes a massive psychological toll on patients and their families.

How Your Support
Fuels Our Mission

DIA Foundation supports these challenges head-on through a dual-front approach funded entirely by your generosity.

Accelerating
Medical Research

We partner with leading research institutions to fund innovative clinical trials. Our research priorities include:

  • Targeted Gene Therapies
Exploring curative pathways for Sickle Cell Disease.
  • Advanced Biologics
Developing next-generation therapies for Rheumatoid Arthritis to stop joint destruction before it starts.
  • Pain Management Alternatives
Investing in non-opioid, non-addictive pain management solutions to improve daily quality of life.

Patient Advocacy &
Structural Support

Research means nothing if patients cannot access the care it yields. Our foundation advocates on the ground to:

  • Provide educational resources and navigation toolkits for newly diagnosed patients.
  • Support peer networks to combat isolation.
  • Advocate for policy changes at the state and federal levels to lower drug costs and ensure equitable healthcare access.

Join the Movement

We cannot change the landscape of medical research alone. Real change requires a collective voice—scientists, advocates, donors, and patients standing together.

Whether you choose to donate, share your personal story, or volunteer at a future event, you are actively moving us closer to a world free from the limitations of SCD and RA.
